Can You Take Steroid Inhaler When Pregnant?

0 votes
I am a pregnant woman and I am suffering asthma from my childhood. I controlled asthma for the first 23 weeks of pregnancy with some medicines. I had zyrtec, one nebulizer and one nasal spray. I took the pill once or twice in a day. I used the spray once in a day. But last week, I got the asthma attacks back. I guess I got it from my little child who was suffering from bronchitis. Immediately, I went to the doctor and she was angry at me for not taking the Pulmicort inhaler. I am pregnant and I want to minimize the medicines but she is not considering that matter at all. I felt good without having that inhaler, so there is no need to take an unnecessary drug. More than that, it is a steroid inhaler which I am very much scared of. She insisted on using the pulmicort nebulizer for the next ten days, four times in a day. After that, she wants to put me on Pulmicort inhaler. I am confused.  Is there any need to take a steroid inhaler at the time of pregnancy? Can asthma drugs affect the baby badly? I am very afraid to take the pills but my doctor said that if I have any asthma attack, my baby won't get enough oxygen. It may be the reason for the death of the baby. According to her, oxygen lack to the baby is worse than the effect of the drugs. I will be grateful any information given by the readers.

Yes. However, it is important that asthma is well controlled in pregnant women. Wherever possible, asthma medications should be taken by inhaler, as this minimises the amount of medicine that enters the bloodstream and crosses the placenta to the baby.
Pregnant women who have been prescribed inhaled steroids for asthma should continue to take these medications as advised, as well-controlled asthma is important for the health of both the mother and the baby.
