I had childhood asthma and my visits to the ER are still clearly imprinted in my mind. After my seventh grade, my asthma was somewhat silent for a number of years until 6 years ago, I suffered a bad attack following breathlessness and wheezing. For the next 5 years, it seemed to be activity-oriented and bronchitis was a regular occurrence. After a while, it became worse and I had to go on large doses of prednisone. This lasted for 3 weeks and there were 3 separate episodes which gave me a very difficult time. The doctor replaced the Asthmacort which I was taking and put me on Advair and Singulair. I found some mold on my walls and had them painted because I suspected that it had something to do with my asthma. It could have been a trigger, right? For some time, the good phase lasted and then again with the onset of fall, I seemed to get the symptoms again. Then I wondered if there could be mold between the walls as well. But the doctor said interior or black mold couldn’t be a trigger and the only mode of treatment he could suggest in the event of a flare up was prednisone. I was getting bad side effects from the prednisone and I seriously doubt whether my body can tolerate the drug anymore.
Can someone suggest any alternatives? Also, does anyone have any ideas about mold in homes and how to get them studied? I live in MO and the state department advised cleaning the walls with bleach. But believe me, we’ve done more than that and still I feel uncomfortable. Is there really any link between mold and asthma? Anyone who knows about this, do give me a detailed explanation.
