What Treatments or Medications Effective for Colds?

I have been found to be suffering from asthma and I am on Albuterol and Advair. My main complication is that whenever I contract a cold, I start coughing persistently. I need months to get some respite from a cold and I feel exhausted after coughing all the time. I would like to know whether anybody can suggest any solutions. I am a person who practices a lot of public speaking and tutoring and I have to get away very often to cough. I am a new comer to this site and would be extremely grateful if someone could suggest some alternatives to my problem at the earliest. I am getting quite desperate about my situation and would be very happy if you can help me out.
