Dilated cardiomyopathy is a blanket term that includes all diseases that weaken the strength of cardiac contraction and lead to dilation of the left ventricle.

This is the most common form of cardiomyopathy (95%).

This is characterized by diminished myocardial contractility usually involving both ventricles.

Occasionally, right ventricular dysfunction predominates, but it usually progresses to biventricular failure.
