Does Biaxin make you tired?
asked Aug 6, 2006 by anonymous
I am currently taking Biaxin 1000 mg a day. which I take one in the morning and one in the evening. When I get to work I am so tiered that on my lunch break I HAVE to take a nap, But I do have a very well night sleep I usually wake up in the middle of the nigh and ever since I started taking the pill I sleep thru out the night. But does any one taking this medication have experience bad headaches? I have been, and not sure If it's because of the pill.
I'm on day two for Biaxin XL. I took it in the morning, but I think I will take it in the evening from now on. It knocks me out. We'll see if I can get to work in two days (it is Saturday today). After months of no dreams, I had a wild and detailed dream last night. nice to know i'm not the only one.

I am taking 500 mg of clarithromycin twice a day and pantoprazole 1000mg twice a day for 14 days with panitoprazole for a bacteria infection in my stomach.  I was ok til day  5 except a metalic taste in my mouth. From that day on unbelievable drowzy.  Good thing I am retired never would be able to work.  Today, day 12, I took meds at 11 p.m. last night fell asleep at 1 a.m. slept til 12 noon today ate some yogart and took the next doze and woke up at 5 p.m. tonight.  It is about doing me in.  I have 4 dozes left can't wait to be finished so I can lead a normal life and sure hope it fixes my stomach ache.  I was diagnosed with H. Pylori.  Glad I found this website to know my sleeping was normal.  Hope my info helps someone else.

I'm taking the generic of it (clarithromycin) and my doctor had to switch me from a dose morning/evening to two at night. It made me so sleepy I was afraid I'd fall asleep driving to work. My doctor said she'd never found anyone else have that reaction. It was awful and I couldn't take my sinus meds with it because they had a very mild drowsy effect but I couldn't imagine combining it with a medicine with an -extreme- drowsy effect. But now taking two doses at night, I don't know if it's when it wears off or what, but I'm wide awake at 252, 352, or 452 (252 this time) am and no possible way I'll get back to sleep and I have to work today. It also gives me bizarre dreams to nightmares.

Thanks for sharing your info. I'm taking 500 mg 2x/day for a sinus infection. I also am very very tired, and I have had nightmares and strange dreams.

i take two of the pills a day, and i find if i take the second pill earlier, like at 6 instead of right before bed, i can sleep easier and don't have nightmares. it says on the fact sheet the pharmacist gives you that you should see your doctor as soon as possible if you have trouble sleeping or get nightmares.

Yes; exhausted.  500 mg. 2x per day for a sinus infection.  I feel like the walking dead. I have to do this for 10 days This should be very interesting.  I am not taking my Clarinex as I do not want anything else that in the slightest way may make me more tired

I had the regular dose of clarithromycin,  and I have to tell that never any medication has given me more side effects than this one, it better had work though, I stuck to the last dose, it was a looong 10 days,
I had the terrible nightmares, poor sleep, stomach upset, metallic taste and stomach upset, etc etc etc . I took the two pills together and in the morning, it has a long wearing off effect and apparently people may experience the side effects until several weeks after, I will question my Nose Ear and throat specialist  next time I see him, there must be a reason this is widely prescribed, my GP said that medication before always tasted terrible and was effective, in any event it is over today, I will see how many days it takes for the effects to wear off

Yes, I'm taking Biaxin (Clarithromycin)500 mg for 10 days for sinusitis/otitis externa. Today I took my second tablet and got so sleepy so scared me. I went to the ER to ask if this was expected. The ER Nurse said no - they had never heard of that happening...Then the ER Doc said Biaxin may enhance the "drowsiness" effects of my other meds (Clarinex, Nasonex, Atenolol, Cardura) but he had not heard of that until me. Ok, so glad I found this site. Have not had any of the side effects--yet..I eat before taking it. Going back to sleep now. It's the best rest I've gotten in a while. Thx for sharing you guys!

Oops. just want to be clear that on my previous post, I am taking Biaxin twice a day (1000mg total/day). Started taking them June 26 and went to ER today, June 27. I feel fine but I also am not working this summer. My sleepy/drowsy effects kick in about 10 minutes after I take it. Will check back to report progress over the next 8 days if there are any physical or psychological changes.

I srarted taking generic Biaxin for a sinus infection after I had run out of my Tenex(Guanfacine) due to an Rx mixup.
The clar gave me nausea and metallic taste, but no drowsiness. After 5 days I go tmy Tenex refill and started taking it again.
After only 1 day of this I was so drowsey I had trouble staying awake in the evening and trouble keeping my eyes focused sometimes. My wide got worried and asked if I'd bumped my head because I was acting like I had a concussion!

Three days to go on the clar, so I think I'll stop the Tenex again temporarily and see if that helps.

I've been taking biaxin for three days, and can hardly get off the couch to do anything. It did really help my bronchitis, but the side effects! Can't sleep at night, I have vivid dreams, slightly nauseated most of the time, and when I do get up, I'm really dizzy. I'm getting a prescription for another antibiotic. Thank goodness I'm retired, I'd be afraid to drive very far.

I yawn and need a nap with every dose of biaxin.  Not liking it too much.  It does however, work well to handle my sinus infection.

I started taking clarithromycin yesterday for an upper respiratory infection - 1000 mg (2 pills) once a day for 10 days.  About half and hour after I took my first dose, I fell asleep and woke up 4 hours later.  I thought that was just because I had been sick for so long that my body was just exhausted.  Today, I took my second dose and started feeling dizzy; however, I didn't feel the uncontrollable tiredness that I felt yesterday.  On the other hand, other than the slight dizziness, I feel so much better than I have since Feb began.  For me, I'm glad to know the tiredness and dizziness are not in my mind and that others have felt the same way as well.  I'm willing to put up with the side effects since I am feeling better and finally feel that I am getting my energy back.

I do feel sleepy and tired with Clarithromycin too. That's why I googled if it really causes that, and I landed on this page. So I guess it's really a side-effect of the antibiotic. -Sandy

I am taking the Biaxin XL and was told I can take them both at the same time instead of twice daily. I took them both around 6p.m. the first night and I did't get the metal taste like I was told I might, to me it tastes more like stomach acid. Like I have been vomiting all day and their is nothing left in my stomach. It was about 2 hours later, so about 8:30pm and I was exhauseted. I past out at about 8:45pm and didn't wake up until the next morning at 10:00a.m. and yet this is not suppose to make you tired. I am not taking any other medications.

Ive just started my second perscription of clarithromycin and I have realised that it has been causing me to be very tired over the last week, trouble getting up, tired throughout the day. A couple of days ago I started not feeling the best mentally, depression like symptoms, just not feeling happy. Never felt anything like this before. Anyone else experienced this?

I've never been so tired in my life.  I googled it and found this site.  Makes me feel a lot better to know that others have experienced the same.  I guess I'll stick it out for the 10 days to get well.  Hope I can make it and work at the same time!

I am on day 3 of biaxin for a lung infection and have never been so tired!  I googled the side effects just today and realized that it's the meds making me exhausted.  I also have the metallic taste and stomach upset.  I am hoping my energy returns...last day to stay home from work.

I googled this because I am on my 5th day of clarithromycin (i have 5 more) and I will randomly take 3 hr naps throughout the day. I am taking it for bronchitis. I never do well with antibiotics but this has been a struggle. The only thing that keeps me surviving is eating it will a large meal when I take it at 9 and 6, taking a probiotic (acidiphilus) two hours before or after (depending how my stomach feels) and drinking lots of water for the metallic taste. I also have vivid terrible nightmares every time I sleep or nap. If my bronchitis isnt gone after all this pain, I will be VERY upset.

I'm on my 3rd day, 4 more to go. So far it's working for my bronchitis but on the first dosage it knocked me out n I also had a 3 hr nap w vivid nightmare n woke up sweating. This is one strange antibiotic but I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing nightmare from clarithromycin n also that metallic taste that last all day.

I take 2 tablet (1000mg) once/ day after hving a big lunch, n now I avoid falling also right after I take it, cause the nightmare are too real.

I'm prone to chest and sinus infections, my immune system is dysfunctional due to the antidepressant Pristiq. I have to take clarithromycin, it's the only thing that seems to work. At first I thought it was the Pristiq that caused my drowsiness (it does, but I'm even more drowsy), now I realise it's the antibiotic. I am not only very drowsy, but also nauseous and off my food, not a nice feeling at all.  This is the 4th course of biaxin I'm having (now) this year.

I was prescribed 500mg twice a day for pharangytis. By day three I felt like my body was shutting down- nightmares, insomnia, dizziness, feeling out of it and extreme tiredness so bad I'd just about convinced myself I have Chronic fatigue. Also had the same feeling like the drug was fighting something that was fighting back. I have to sit down just to brush my teeth.

So I'm 36 hrs off it and I feel just the same if not worse as on it. I'll post again to indicate when the side effects subside.

I am taking this and very tired.  Really upset stomach.

Being tired is really hard to get through the day without a nap. Also dizzy effect too. I am taking for ear infection.  That is better however this medication is very strong with side effects.

MimiI have just started clarithmyacin for a gastric ulcer. I am so sleepy and just falling asleep all day. Bad metallic taste . I am going to take both doses at one time in the evening to see if can wake up in the morning early enough to go to work. Glad to know why I am so tired as this is not normal for me. I also have a headache which I rarely get.

I have been on 500mg twice daily for a sinus infection .. I feel very tired and my body feels heavy. Tried to go on a walk and felt like I was dragging my feet. Took a 3hr nap this afternoon, also took a couple hour nap yesterday-I don't usually take naps. I think it's weird that fatigue isn't a listed side effect!

I'm a gym goer, a non Napper, and I get home from work and am straight to the couch. Exhausted. I'm on 500mg x 2 per day. I'm going to pick up a pro biotic and some fricken caffeine pills so I can stay awake. Apparently they say it disrupts your ability to absorb nutrients in food properly and that is what is causing this. I am feeling better but I can't wait until this dose is done.

I'm currently on a dosage of two pills twice a day and it's day 5, but I am STOPPING!!! I feel dizzy, like I am drunk, and so tired. I can not remember many conversations I have had and feel completely out of it. My dreams have been neat and very vivid, usually always relating to the same thing night after night. The metallic taste in my mouth 24/7 makes my stomach upset and this morning I called in sick to work (I think the medication is now making me more sick than the virus I had!) because I had the WORST migraine and felt so, so sick to my stomach.  I have taken this medication one time before and I had none of these side effects. It is great when it works, but it is not working well with me this time.
