My 9 month old baby is taking aterax for a itchy skin irritation/alergy (3,5ml 6-8 hours p/day).  How long do you have to administer it before they get addicted. I am scared that prolong use will make him reliant on Aterax?

In contrast to drugs in the benzodiazepine class, (i.e. alprazolam, diazepam) which carry a potential for abuse and dependence, Aterax (hydroxyzine) is very unlikely to cause any dependence due to its relative strength compared to other substances. For how long did the doctor tell you to use Aterax (hydroxyzine) on your baby? If you strictly follow your doctor’s instructions, for sure your baby’s reliance on Aterax will not happen. Follow the treatment dose and on how many days did the doctor tell you to administer Aterax on your baby and I am sure everything will be alright. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
